''I have thought many times about writing my autobiography - to literally set the record straight, not only about my years with The Searchers and then with my own band from 1986, but also to correct the myths that have grown up over the years.

"As the founder member of The Searchers, who brought Tony Jackson and Chris Curtis into the band, now is the right time to publish my book. It is exactly 50 years ago that The Searchers signed to Pye Records and had a No.1 smash hit with our very first single - 'Sweets For My Sweet'! In 1964 we were proud to be voted second only to The Beatles in the New Musical Express poll for top vocal group.

"My autobiography, 'The Search For Myself ', will be published later this year. Apart from my long career in the music business, the book will also describe the great importance of my family life and my interests outside of music - such as antique clocks! Many photos and illustrations from our family's personal collection will be included.

"The definitive box set, 'Hearts In Their Eyes', released last year, is a fitting tribute to The Searchers' recordings between 1960 and 1985, with most of the tracks featuring my lead vocal and /or lead guitar. My autobiography will also be a tribute to those Searchers sadly no longer with us - Tony Jackson, Chris Curtis, our original bassist Joe (Tony) West and our one-time vocalist, Johnny Sandon.
